  1. Bourbon is an American whiskey

The US Congress has declared that bourbon is “a distinctive product of the United States.” Although 95% of world’s bourbon comes from Kentucky, bourbon can be distilled in other states.

 

  1. No One Knows Who First Used the Term Bourbon

Although disputed, Elijah Craig is said to be the father of Bourbon. Across the county line, in Bourbon County Kentucky, Jacob Spears is said to be the first person to label his product Bourbon.

 

  1. Bourbon Laws

Bourbon must be made in the United States, anywhere

Be made with no less than 51% corn in the mash

Aged in new charred oak containers

Distilled to no more than 160 proof

Entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof

Bottled at no less than 80 proof

 

  1. Bourbon Starts Out Clear

When Bourbon is removed from the still, it is the color of water. It is the aging in the charred barrels that gives the liquid it’s color and unique taste.

 

  1. Bourbon Barrels are a Hot Commodity!
